A closer look
Rod Serling didn't actually care much about aliens, monsters, or spooky parallel dimensions; he just wanted to complain about corporate greed and war. But 1950s network executives constantly butchered his dramatic scripts to please nervous advertisers. Frustrated, Serling realized that if he dressed his heavy political and social commentary up as silly science fiction, the executives were too dense to realize they were being criticized. It was the ultimate creative loophole.
