While NASA preferred using specially trained chimpanzees, the USSR simply rounded up stray mongrels off the streets of Moscow. Scientists reasoned that if a dog could survive the freezing, miserable winters of a Russian alleyway, they were perfectly suited to handle the brutal stress of orbital rocket launches.
