While network executives were busy figuring out how to sell soap, Shirley Clarke was using early portable video equipment as a psychological weapon. In the early 1970s, she created the 'Tee Pee Video Space Troupe,' turning her penthouse into a massive, closed-circuit feedback loop. She would make participants watch themselves on monitors in real-time, often disorienting them with delayed feeds and mirrored projections. It was part performance art, part aggressive group therapy, completely dismantling the passive way humans were supposed to consume television.
