If you're going to lose a facial appendage over an algebra dispute, you might as well replace it with solid bling. The brilliant 16th-century astronomer got into a violent argument with his cousin over who was the vastly superior mathematician. They settled it with swords in the dark, which predictably ended with Brahe losing his nasal bridge. He spent his remaining years wearing a glued-on brass prosthetic.
