Hajji Bektash Veli and the twelve-fluted secret

Headwear was a deadly serious esoteric code in Ottoman-era Sufi orders. Initiates of the Bektashi order wore the Taj (a specialized crown), specifically folded with twelve flutes to represent the twelve Imams. Surrendering to the order involved the ritual giving of the Taslim Tash, a stone worn on the belt that literally symbolized putting one's neck on the executioner's block for God.
