Why waste fats can power a jet
A jet engine does not need fuel to come from crude oil; it needs fuel with the right properties. Processing waste fats and plant oils breaks them down and rebuilds them into hydrocarbon molecules similar to those in conventional jet fuel. The result is called sustainable aviation fuel, or SAF: fuel made from alternative feedstocks that can be used in aircraft designed for ordinary kerosene.
That chemical transformation matters more than the original source. Raw cooking oil is too thick and chemically different to pour into an aircraft fuel system. After processing, the fuel can flow, ignite and release energy in ways the engine is built to handle.
The engine stayed; the fuel had to qualify
Aviation fuel must work reliably across a wide range of temperatures and pressures, while remaining compatible with engines, fuel lines and seals. A new fuel therefore has to meet demanding technical requirements before airlines can use it. SAF is designed as a drop-in fuel—a substitute that fits existing aircraft systems rather than requiring a redesigned engine.
A transatlantic flight using SAF showed that this approach could work on a demanding long-haul route, not merely in a laboratory test. But a successful flight is a demonstration, not proof that enough suitable fuel is available to replace conventional jet fuel across the industry. Making and distributing SAF at scale remains a separate challenge.
What changes—and what does not
Burning SAF still releases carbon dioxide from the aircraft’s engines. Its potential climate benefit comes mainly from the fuel’s lifecycle: the plants used as feedstocks may have absorbed carbon while growing, and waste materials can be put to use instead of relying solely on fossil sources. The overall benefit depends on how the fuel is produced and transported.
The practical implication is striking: reducing aviation’s reliance on fossil fuel may not require a new kind of airplane. It may begin with a fuel made from discarded fats that has been processed until a familiar jet engine can use it.
