A closer look
The original glamorous goth of late-night television had incredibly strict artistic boundaries. Maila Nurmi, who created the iconic Vampira persona in the 1950s, treated her macabre hosting gig as high art. When network executives demanded she add a goofy, talking skull sidekick to her segments to appeal to young children, she flat-out refused to compromise her chilling, silent-movie aesthetic. The network fired her, inadvertently paving the way for Elvira to dominate the space decades later.
