Robert P McCulloch purchased the original 1831 London Bridge in 1968 and shipped it piece by piece to Lake Havasu City in Arizona, believing it would serve as a fantastic tourist trap for his remote desert real estate development; McCulloch paid 2.4 million dollars to the City of London, who were thrilled to offload a sinking, crumbling stone bridge onto a clueless American billionaire, leading to the stones being meticulously numbered, transported across the Atlantic Ocean, and reassembled over a specially dug canal in the scorching Mojave Desert, so today, bewildered tourists can travel to the American southwest to stare at a genuinely historic piece of British infrastructure that looks completely absurd surrounded by palm trees, jet skis, and cheap margarita bars
