An apple a day keeps the doctor away, mainly because everyone was perpetually intoxicated. Early colonial apples were shockingly bitter, completely inedible crab apples. Nobody was snacking on them; they were aggressively pressed and fermented into hard cider, which was widely considered much safer to drink than the local water supply.
