There was no grand lore about Autobots and Decepticons initially. Hasbro simply found two completely unrelated toy lines in Japan that happened to transform into cars and planes, bought the rights, slapped a unified branding on them, and paid Marvel writers to desperately invent a backstory so they could legally market them on television as a cohesive universe.
