In 1941, a group of rural counties in Northern California and Southern Oregon got so fed up with their terrible roads that they decided to secede and form the State of Jefferson. They blocked a highway with armed men and handed out 'declarations of independence' to random drivers. The movement only dissolved because a major international event distracted everyone.
