In 1819, Spain essentially gave up on trying to manage Florida. The territory was overrun with runaway slaves, indigenous tribes, and American squatters, and it was becoming a massive headache. They agreed to hand it over to the United States in the Adams-Onís Treaty, completely abandoning the humid, alligator-infested swamp without getting any direct cash payment.
