A closer look
Nothing screams American pride quite like nearly triggering a civil war over a swamp in the Midwest. In 1835, due to poorly drawn mapping lines, both the state of Ohio and the territory of Michigan claimed ownership of the 'Toledo Strip.' Tensions rose, heavily armed local militias were deployed to the border, and an endless stream of angry letters was sent. The only actual casualty of the 'Toledo War' was a Michigan sheriff who got stabbed in the leg with a penknife before Congress intervened and gave Michigan the Upper Peninsula as a consolation prize.
