California was once drawn as an island

Early explorers possessed all the confidence in the world and absolutely none of the navigational accuracy. For nearly two centuries, mapmakers stubbornly insisted that California was a massive island completely detached from the North American mainland. It took generations of frustrated cartographers to finally convince everyone that the landmass was, in fact, firmly attached to the rest of the continent.
