Before soft, breathable silicone became the standard, people genuinely thought putting heavy glass directly onto their corneas was a stellar idea. Invented in the late 1800s, these early ocular domes covered the entire visible surface and were so incredibly uncomfortable they could only be worn for a couple of hours. It was the ultimate commitment to vanity over basic comfort.
