If you want a plastic Ork to look intimidating, you can't just stand him on a dining room table next to a salt shaker. The art of terrain crafting, or "kitbashing," is a shadowy underworld of hobbyists looking at actual garbage and seeing a grimdark fortress. Crafters figured out that the texture of cork board perfectly mimics blasted asphalt when painted grey, and that a spray of cheap hairspray over salt creates incredibly realistic rust weathering. It’s an exercise in taking mundane household waste and subjecting it to complex chemical weathering techniques just so adult men can play highly tactical war games on what is essentially an aggressively decorated pile of trash.
