Baarle-Hertog and Baarle-Nassau are two municipalities that form a ridiculously complex border between Belgium and the Netherlands, with the international line cutting directly through cafes, living rooms, and grocery stores. Thanks to a series of convoluted medieval land treaties that nobody bothered to clean up, you can legally sleep with your head in Belgium and your feet in the Netherlands. During periods when Dutch laws required bars to close early, patrons would literally just stand up and move their tables two feet across the room to the Belgian side to keep drinking. It is an absolute administrative nightmare for anyone trying to figure out which country to pay taxes to, but a hilarious tourist attraction for folks who want to hop back and forth across a painted white line until border patrol agents collectively lose their minds over the sheer absurdity of European history
