A closer look

Commuting is bad enough without being forced into manual labor, but Swedish designers in the 1990s strongly disagreed. The Sjösala was a concept for a multi-passenger commuter ferry where the riders themselves provided the propulsion by pedaling stationary bikes hooked up to the paddlewheels. You essentially had to pay for a ticket just to do an aggressive spin class over open water. Naturally, exhausted office workers preferred boats with actual engines.
