What Freezing Weather Does to a Phone Battery

A phone battery does not suddenly lose all its stored energy when the temperature drops. Instead, cold slows the chemical reactions that move energy through its lithium-ion cells. The electrolyte—the liquid or gel that lets charged particles travel between the battery’s electrodes—becomes less effective at low temperatures, so the battery has a harder time supplying power quickly.

That matters because a phone draws bursts of current when its screen lights up, its camera starts, or its processor works hard. In the cold, the battery’s voltage can dip during those bursts. If it falls below the phone’s safe operating threshold, the device may shut down even though the battery still has energy left.

Why the Battery Reading Can Seem to Plunge

The percentage on the screen is an estimate, not a direct measurement of how much usable energy remains. A cold battery’s reduced voltage can make the phone misjudge its charge, so the reading may drop sharply or the device may turn off. Once the phone warms, the battery’s chemistry works more normally and some apparent capacity can return.

This is usually a temporary performance problem, not proof that the cold has permanently drained the battery. Repeated exposure to temperature extremes can still contribute to wear, but a brief spell outdoors is different from lasting chemical damage.

Charging Is the Bigger Cold-Weather Risk

Charging a lithium-ion battery while it is very cold is more concerning than simply using the phone. At low temperatures, incoming lithium ions may not settle into the battery’s electrode as intended; some can form metallic lithium on its surface, a process called lithium plating. That can permanently reduce capacity and, in severe cases, create safety risks.

Phones commonly slow or pause charging when their temperature is outside a safe range. If a cold phone shuts down, let it warm gradually indoors before charging it. The sudden shutdown may be temporary; forcing a charge while the battery is still icy can make the problem lasting.
