A closer look
The concept of furniture or buildings that assemble themselves sounds like pure sci-fi, but programmable matter is dragging it into reality. These M-Blocks don't have external moving parts; instead, they contain an internal flywheel spinning at 20,000 RPM. When the flywheel brakes suddenly, the angular momentum violently throws the cube through the air. Magnets on the edges ensure they snap together upon landing. In the future, a swarm of these could be dropped into a disaster zone to automatically build a staircase over rubble.
