Topographic maps represent 3D terrain with flat lines

Instead of drawing little cartoon mountains, professionals use contour lines to represent elevation on a totally flat piece of paper. When the concentric squiggles get uncomfortably close together, it means the terrain is dangerously steep. It is a brilliant two-dimensional code that prevents hikers from accidentally walking off literal cliffs.
