A closer look
Food most aggressively engineered to taste amazing is also the food most likely to convince your body you are still hungry. Ultra-processed products combine rapid-digesting starches, cheap oils, emulsifiers, and artificial flavours into a texture that melts almost instantly on your tongue. That fast disappearance tricks your brain's fullness sensors, which rely partly on chewing time and stomach stretch. You swallow a huge amount of energy before your gut can raise its hand and say 'enough'. Over time, this constant overshoot trains you to crave hits of soft, salty, sweet food instead of slower, fibrous meals. The fix is not perfection; it is friction. Add obstacles between you and ultra-processed snacks, and add effortless defaults for whole foods. Keep cut fruit, nuts, or boiled eggs at eye level, push chips to a high shelf, and try to make at least one meal per day mostly protein and plants so your hunger signals can recalibrate.
