For centuries, the absolute greatest threat to the mighty empires of the sea was a pathetic lack of citrus fruits. Sailors were entirely fine surviving cannonballs and hurricanes, only to have their connective tissues literally dissolve because they lacked simple ascorbic acid. Armadas were effectively defeated by bad dietary planning long before rival navies ever fired a shot.
