Cows cannot actually digest tough grass on their own. They rely completely on massive internal vats packed with specialized bacteria to ferment the fibrous plant matter into usable calories. They are basically walking, mooing microbial fermentation tanks functioning solely as a public transit system for millions of microscopic freeloaders.
