The glitch that became Mortal Kombat’s Ermac

The most elaborate fan theory in fighting game history started with a literal software glitch. In the original arcade menus, there was a diagnostic line reading 'ERMACS' (Error Macros) to track coding bugs. Players bizarrely assumed this was a secret red ninja. Eventually, the developers decided the fans were too stupid to correct, so they just made him a real playable character in Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3.
