A closer look

Ichneumon wasps reproduce by injecting their eggs directly into the bodies of living caterpillars, ensuring their offspring have a warm, fleshy buffet the moment they hatch. The wasp larvae slowly eat the paralyzed caterpillar from the inside out, instinctively saving the vital organs for last so their host stays alive and fresh for as long as possible. This horrific reproductive cycle is so deeply cruel that it supposedly made Charles Darwin question the existence of a benevolent God. It is hard to blame him, considering mother nature decided the best way for this insect to raise a family was to invent the plot of the movie Alien millions of years before Ridley Scott did. When people talk about the beautiful miracle of life, they conveniently leave out the part where baby wasps treat a living creature like a slow-cooker filled with agonizing pain
