As Brisbane built its underground Metro busway, engineers gleefully scrapped plans for giant, multi-million-dollar ventilation shafts. Because the fleet relies entirely on battery-electric bi-articulated buses, the enclosed tunnels don't accumulate toxic exhaust gases, saving staggering engineering costs simply by ditching tailpipes.
