The rubber tiles that help submarines evade sonar
Stealth underwater warfare is mostly just gluing hundreds of squishy bath mats to the outside of a billion-dollar nuclear tube. Submarines use anechoic tiles made of synthetic rubber to passively absorb the sound waves of active sonar. Without these giant black stickers, a sub would light up enemy radar screens like a sunken Christmas tree.
