Before the 1950s, if you wanted stretchy clothing, you had to wear actual heavy, hot rubber. Because rubber was strictly rationed for war efforts, chemists urgently synthesized a highly elastic polyurethane fiber. It could stretch to 600 percent of its length without snapping, forever changing the trajectory of 1980s aerobics videos.
