Whenever lords left their estates to travel, they temporarily transferred ownership to trusted friends to manage the land. When those friends inevitably refused to give the land back, the courts had to invent trust law, creating a highly complex legal mechanism that wealthy families still use today to aggressively shield their assets from taxation.
