Nature can be brutal, and the strangler fig is basically the botanical equivalent of a horror movie villain. It starts as a tiny seed dropped high in a canopy, then slowly sends roots plunging downward. Once it anchors into the dirt, it aggressively wraps around the host tree, eventually crushing and starving it until only a hollow cage of fig roots remains.
