When the Mustang launched in 1964, Ford heavily targeted young, single, working women with their advertising campaigns. It was pitched as a sensible, stylish grocery-getter that was cheap to maintain. It wasn’t until Carroll Shelby got his hands on it that it mutated into a tire-shredding icon.
