George Orwell borrowed his pen name from a local river

Eric Arthur Blair didn't want to embarrass his family when he published his first book about living in extreme poverty, so he needed an alias. He chose the name 'George' because it sounded like an honest, standard English name, and 'Orwell' simply because it was a beautiful river he liked visiting in Suffolk.
