A closer look
In the pitch-black abyss of the deep ocean, drawing attention to yourself is generally a terrible idea. Unless, of course, you are an Atolla jellyfish trapped in the jaws of a predator. Lacking claws or venom, this desperate invert triggers a 'burglar alarm' defense. It lights up its entire bell in an aggressive, strobing blue bioluminescent display. The goal isn't to scare the attacker away; it's to act as a glowing dinner bell for an even larger, much more terrifying apex predator. The new monster arrives, eats the original attacker, and the jellyfish casually floats away from the ensuing carnage.
