The spine-chilling whine of the dentist's drill has been terrorizing patients for far longer than you'd imagine. George F. Green patented the very first electric dental drill in 1875. Prior to this, dentists used agonizingly slow, hand-cranked or foot-pedaled mechanical drills that took hours to burrow into a cavity, meaning the electric version was actually a mercy, despite sounding like a tortured mosquito.
