In an era when women were told their delicate brains couldn't handle medical science, Lucy Hobbs Taylor completely ignored everyone. Denied entry to dental school purely due to her gender, she just opened her own practice anyway in 1861. She was so overwhelmingly successful that the dental college was ultimately forced to backtrack, officially granting her a degree just to save face.
