A closer look
If you are afraid of heights, absolutely do not get on a boat in Wales. The Pontcysyllte Aqueduct is a frankly terrifying piece of 19th-century engineering that carries the Llangollen Canal directly over a plunging river valley. You ride in a narrowboat through a cast-iron trough sitting 126 feet in the air, and while the towpath side has a railing, the water side has absolutely nothing. Peering over the edge of the boat offers a dizzying, unobstructed drop that makes a leisurely cruise feel like an extreme sport.
