Nineteenth-century folks genuinely thought baking dough on a specific religious holiday gave it magical preservative properties. They would bake a small loaf on Good Friday and hang it from the ceiling all year, fully believing it would never mold and would aggressively ward off house fires. Surprisingly, it mostly just attracted aggressive mice.
