Why roller-coaster loops aren't perfect circles

A perfect circle would literally snap your neck. Early engineers realized that if a coaster hits a perfectly circular loop at high speeds, the immense g-forces push blood entirely out of the rider's brain, causing instant blackouts. They adopted an elongated teardrop shape known as a clothoid to gently adjust the violent physical forces.
