If you've ever wondered why moving to the right side of the stage is called 'Stage Left', it's because theater revolves entirely around the ego of the actor. The directions are based strictly on the performer facing the audience. Moving towards the audience is 'downstage' because older stages were literally slanted downwards to improve sightlines.
