In the late 1950s, RCA and General Motors successfully tested autonomous cars by burying magnetic cables beneath the highway asphalt. The car's sensors just followed the hidden wire like a glorified slot car, which was a brilliant concept until anyone realized tearing up every road was financially ruinous.
