Thorium is the underappreciated backup dancer to uranium that could actually save the grid. Unlike traditional reactor fuels, thorium cannot easily sustain a runaway chain reaction on its own; it requires a constant helper source to keep reacting. If things go horribly wrong, you just turn off the helper beam, and the thorium reaction completely stops, effectively rendering catastrophic meltdowns chemically impossible.
