Popularized by Washington Irving, the folklore surrounding a jolly man entering houses strictly through the fireplace makes absolutely no architectural sense. Instead of using the perfectly good front door, he squeezes a magical, soot-covered frame down a narrow brick tube just to leave presents. It is a deeply inefficient and highly unsanitary delivery route.
