Why World War I pilots were denied parachutes

British military brass in the First World War were so utterly detached from reality that they considered survival gear a moral failing. They explicitly banned parachutes for pilots, fiercely arguing that having an escape route would make the men abandon expensive planes too quickly. They literally preferred their pilots burning to death over losing a wooden biplane.
