An old coin name becomes household money

In The Sims, the money used to pay for everyday virtual life is called Simoleons. The word has a much older history: “simoleon” was 18th-century slang for a sixpence, a British coin worth six pennies. That history gives the game’s made-up currency a real-world echo without tying it to a modern national currency.

Why the name fits the game

A sixpence was a small unit of everyday spending; Simoleons serve a similarly practical role inside the game. Players use them to furnish homes, make purchases, and manage the costs of a Sim’s life. The name turns a familiar kind of coin into something distinctly tied to the Sims, while keeping the idea of money easy to recognize.

That blend of the ordinary and the playful is useful in a life-simulation game: the currency feels understandable, but it belongs to the game’s world. A household budget can be part of the play, even when the money itself is fictional.
