Escaping capture centuries ago meant building an entire metropolis straight into a West African lagoon. To avoid the Fon warriors who couldn't legally fight on water due to religious beliefs, the Tofinu people dragged logs into Lake Nokoué to build a massive floating city. Today, navigating Benin's incredible stilt village requires aggressively dodging thousands of wooden canoes doubling as floating grocery stores.
