The voice behind Snake also wrote X-Men

David Hayter is best known to many players as the gravelly voice of Solid Snake in the Metal Gear Solid games. Before that role became a defining part of his career, he wrote the screenplay for X-Men (2000), the first live-action film in the franchise.

From comic-book team to movie story

A screenplay has to turn a sprawling comic-book world into a story that works on screen: choosing what to foreground, shaping scenes around the cast, and giving viewers a clear route into the characters. Hayter’s script helped bring the mutant team to theaters—and put Hugh Jackman in the role of Wolverine. The film became Jackman’s major international breakthrough, even though he would go on to play the character for years.

Two very different kinds of performance

The connection is striking because Hayter’s work reaches audiences in opposite ways. In the games, listeners hear him inhabit Snake; in X-Men, moviegoers encountered his writing without necessarily knowing his name. The same performer associated with one of gaming’s recognizable voices also helped introduce a new generation of viewers to Wolverine.
