Bicycle wheel spokes are tensioned by threaded nipples
Despite sounding like a punchline, this tiny component keeps the entire wheel from collapsing into a sad metal taco. Each thin wire spoke is held to the rim by a small brass or aluminum nut known as a nipple. By twisting these little fasteners, you adjust the tension of the spoke, pulling the rim into a perfectly true circle—or completely warping it if you have no idea what you are doing.
