Because not every protagonist needs glorious hair and a charming smirk. The creator was utterly sick of pristine, noble knights saving the day, so he demanded the art team make the Ghost of Sparta look as aggressively unpleasant as possible. The sheer amount of ash and red rage painted onto him was purely an anti-aesthetic choice.
