A closer look
Charles Berlitz popularized the mystical lore of the Bermuda Triangle in the nineteen seventies with a bestselling book claiming that rogue magnetic fields, UFOs, or the sunken crystal pyramids of Atlantis were making ships and planes disappear. Maritime insurance companies and the Coast Guard have repeatedly released statistical data proving that vessels do not disappear in the Bermuda Triangle at any higher rate than in any other heavily traveled section of the global ocean. Berlitz essentially cherry-picked historical tragedies, ignored the existence of massive tropical hurricanes, and fabricated details to sell millions of paperbacks to a gullible public. It remains the only geographical location on earth whose entire supernatural reputation is based entirely on terrible journalistic research and bad weather
